A Legacy of Excellence

The James Norris Memorial Trophy, also known as the Norris Trophy, is one of the most prestigious awards in hockey. It is awarded annually to the National Hockey League's top defenseman, recognizing their exceptional skills and contributions to their team. The award is named after James Norris, a former President of the NHL, and has been presented since 1954.

In the 2021-22 season, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar captured the Norris Trophy. Makar had a remarkable season, finishing with 86 points (28 goals, 58 assists) and a plus-59 rating. He was a key contributor to the Avalanche's success, helping them win the Stanley Cup.

In the previous season, San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson emerged victorious, claiming the Norris Trophy. Karlsson had an outstanding campaign, recording 25 goals and 101 points, the highest total among all defensemen in the league. His exceptional offensive and defensive abilities earned him the recognition as the top defenseman in the NHL.

A History of Elite Defensemen

Over the years, the Norris Trophy has been awarded to some of the greatest defensemen in NHL history. Bobby Orr, considered by many as the greatest defenseman of all time, won the Norris Trophy eight times. Other legendary winners include Nicklas Lidstrom (seven Norris Trophies), Ray Bourque (five Norris Trophies), and Paul Coffey (three Norris Trophies).

Criteria for Selection

The Norris Trophy is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA). Voters consider a variety of factors when selecting the winner, including the player's overall impact on their team, their defensive abilities, and their offensive contributions. The award recognizes not only individual performances but also the player's role in their team's success.
